Mexico's Air Traffic Surges to 61 Million Passengers in First Half of 2025
Mexico's aviation industry demonstrated robust dynamism during the first half of 2025, handling a total of 61,182,000 passengers on domestic and international flights. This figure, released by the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) based on data from the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC), not only represents growth compared to the previous year but also solidifies the sector's recovery and expansion beyond 2019 levels.
The report details that domestic traffic continues to be the main driver of this growth. Between January and June 2025, 30,726,000 passengers were transported within Mexico, which translates to a 4.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024 and a remarkable 20.1% above 2019 figures.
In this segment, ultra-low-cost carriers Viva and Volaris reaffirm their dominance. Combined, both airlines transported 22,447,000 passengers on domestic routes, marking a joint growth of 8.2% versus 2024. This performance underscores the continued preference of Mexican travelers for the low-cost model for their domestic air travel.
Meanwhile, the international market also showed positive performance, with 30,456,000 passengers transported. This volume is 1.7% higher than that recorded in the first half of 2024 and a strong 24.1% greater than in 2019, highlighting Mexico's strength as a global tourist and business destination.

Who Dominates the Mexican Skies?
Domestic Market: Viva and Volaris lead with 73% of passenger traffic.
International Market (Mexican carriers): Aeroméxico and Volaris are the main operators.
International Market (U.S. carriers): American Airlines and United Airlines handle the largest number of passengers to and from Mexico.
Within the international segment, Aeroméxico and Volaris moved 6,803,000 passengers, a figure that represents a 4.6% rise compared to 2024 and an extraordinary 39.6% above 2019. This progress is partly a reflection of the route expansion permitted after the recovery of the Category 1 aviation safety rating.
On the foreign counterpart side, U.S. carriers American Airlines and United Airlines continue to be the leading players in traffic between the two countries, having transported a combined total of 6,794,000 passengers during the period.

The Secretary of Tourism, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, commented that "every transported passenger represents an opportunity for economic growth, job creation, and well-being in tourist destinations. We will continue working to make tourism a true lever of transformation and an engine of Shared Prosperity for everyone." According to the official, these figures demonstrate the strengthening of air connectivity as a pillar of national development.
