Nuevo Laredo’s Quetzalcóatl International Airport, near the Mexico–U.S. border, suspended operations on Monday (Feb. 3) due to shootouts near the airport, according to Mexican media reports.
The violence erupted following the capture of Ricardo González, alias "El Ricky," an alleged leader of the Northeast Cartel, one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the region. His arrest triggered a series of armed confrontations throughout the city, leading to the airport’s temporary closure.
Nuevo Laredo’s mayor, Carmen Lilia Canturosas, confirmed the flight suspensions in a statement on social media, informing that all scheduled flights on Monday were canceled and rescheduled for Tuesday, February 4. She also urged residents to stay indoors until the situation stabilizes, emphasizing the serious security threat in the city, according to aviation news outlet AEROIN.
Mexican airline VivaAerobús also announced the suspension of its operations at the airport, stating that the measure aims to ensure the safety of passengers, crew, and ground personnel. Meanwhile, the U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo advised its staff to remain in secure locations due to escalating violence.

- AM2970 (Aeroméxico Connect) from Mexico City (AICM) – 2:21 PM local time
