Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara Cruz has announced the expansion of Oaxaca International Airport, a project backed by a 2.12 billion MXN ($103 million) investment from Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (Asur). Speaking at a press conference, Jara Cruz highlighted that the modernization will quadruple the airport’s infrastructure, increasing its size from 7,000 to 28,000 square meters.
Boosting Connectivity and Economic Growth
According to the governor, this expansion will double the number of incoming visitors, strengthen the state’s connectivity, and enhance foreign trade by facilitating increased exports and imports. The project is also expected to lead to a rise in international flights, attract more foreign tourists, and generate greater foreign exchange revenue, boosting the local economy.
Citing El Economista, Jara Cruz emphasized that this initiative aligns with Oaxaca’s rapid economic growth, positioning it as the fastest-growing state in southern Mexico and the second-fastest nationwide, just behind Durango.
Passenger Traffic on the Rise
By the end of December 2024, Oaxaca International Airport recorded a 5.52% increase in passenger traffic, adding 93,531 additional travelers. Domestic passenger numbers grew by 5.12%, while international arrivals surged 20.28%, reflecting Oaxaca’s rising appeal as a global destination.
Expansion Timeline and Key Upgrades
Jorge Carlos Campos Romero, general administrator of Oaxaca International Airport, confirmed that construction began in January 2024 and is scheduled for completion in December 2028.
The renovation will include upgrades to:
- Check-in counters and security screening areas
- Baggage claim and immigration checkpoints
- Customs inspection lines and aircraft parking positions
- Jet bridges, waiting areas, and commercial spaces
- Elevators and escalators
This ambitious project aims to modernize Oaxaca’s airport infrastructure and support the state’s growing tourism and trade sectors.
