Qantas is set to launch a major fleet modernization program for a significant portion of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft, aiming to improve the travel experience on both domestic and international routes.
A total of 42 aircraft—out of the 75 currently in operation—will undergo upgrades. The refurbishment will include:
- New Business Class seats
- Upgraded Economy seats
- Overhead compartments with 50% more storage capacity
- High-speed Wi-Fi connectivity, free of charge
The Qantas 737-800 fleet has an average age of 16 years, with the latest batch of aircraft delivered between 2012 and 2014.
The first upgraded aircraft is scheduled to enter the program in 2027. Qantas' 737s operate domestic flights, Trans-Tasman routes, and short-haul international services to destinations like Bali (Indonesia), Fiji, and Vanuatu. This investment will align the 737 cabin design with Qantas' new Airbus A321XLR and Airbus A220 models, which will eventually replace these aircraft.
“Investing in our fleet is one of the most important ways we can transform the flying experience for our customers and ensure we always offer a great journey. As we introduce more new aircraft into our fleet, we are also making our existing planes look and feel brand new,” said Vanessa Hudson, CEO of Qantas Group.
