The Uruguayan Air Force acquires five Embraer A-29 Super Tucano aircraft
The FAU advances in modernizing its fleet with the addition of five Embraer A-29 Super Tucano aircraft. This contract, which includes mission equipment, a flight simulator, and logistical support, strengthens air defense capabilities and positions Uruguay as the sixth operator of this model in South America
The Uruguayan Air Force (FAU) has formalized the acquisition of five A-29 Super Tucano aircraft, consolidating its fleet modernization strategy. The contract includes, in addition to the aircraft, mission equipment, a flight simulator, and integrated logistical services, in an effort to strengthen the country’s operational and defense capabilities.
This agreement expands an initial order signed in August 2024, when the FAU ordered one aircraft with options for five additional units, which are now confirmed. Uruguay's Minister of National Defense, Armando Castaingdebat, emphasized the importance of this acquisition, stating that "this project reinforces our commitment to modernizing the Armed Forces and enhances our air defense capabilities."
For its part, Embraer, the Brazilian manufacturer and leader in defense aircraft, celebrated the strengthening of its relationship with Uruguay in the context of the 50th anniversary of its first export to the country. According to Bosco da Costa Junior, President of Embraer Defense & Security, "we are ready to provide full support to the FAU and ensure its operational readiness for strategic missions such as border surveillance."
The A-29 Super Tucano, highlighted by Embraer for its efficiency, versatility, and low operating cost, has become a key platform for air forces around the world. With this acquisition, Uruguay joins a list of 20 international operators, consolidating the A-29 as one of the most widely used light attack and advanced training aircraft globally.
This investment also includes a next-generation flight simulator, designed to improve pilot training and maximize aircraft availability. According to the FAU’s Commander-in-Chief, General Luis H. De León, "this addition positions us technologically and prepares us to face new regional security challenges."
The A-29 Super Tucano already has more than 290 units delivered, offering a wide range of operational capabilities, from close air support to border surveillance.
