Volaris kicked off April with a notable expansion at Monterrey International Airport, launching four new domestic routes, bringing its total number of domestic connections from Nuevo León’s capital to 18.
Since beginning operations in Monterrey in 2006, the airline has transported over 16.8 million passengers, now offering service to 26 destinations—both domestic and international—from the city.
Despite operational restrictions due to issues with Pratt & Whitney engines, which have grounded part of its Airbus A320neo and A321neo fleet, Volaris continues pursuing a growth strategy in a market where Viva Aerobus remains the leader.
The new routes from Monterrey are:
• León/Guanajuato (BJX): two daily flights
• Puerto Vallarta (PVR): one daily flight
• Tuxtla Gutiérrez (TGZ): one daily flight
• Toluca (TLC): one daily flight
Volaris will compete directly with Viva on all of these routes, as Monterrey serves as Viva’s primary base.
Additional frequency increases include:
• Mexico City (AICM): from 14 to 21 weekly flights
• Guadalajara (GDL): from 21 to 28 weekly flights
• Mérida (MID): from 2 to 7 weekly flights (rising to 11 in June)
• Tijuana (TIJ): from 7 to 14 weekly flights

Expansion and competition in Monterrey
With these new routes and frequency increases, Volaris will double its share of available seat kilometers (ASK) in Monterrey, rising from 8.1% to 15.8%. However, Viva Aerobus maintains a dominant market share of 59.3%.
Monterrey is set to become Volaris’ fourth most important hub, accounting for 5.5% of the airline’s total ASK capacity.
The newly added routes join a network of 15 domestic destinations already served from Monterrey, including Cancún, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Mérida, and Tijuana, among others.
