WestJet Announces Direct Flights Between Calgary and Mexico City
WestJet will launch a direct Calgary-Mexico City route in May 2025, reconnecting two major business hubs, expanding air cargo capacity, and offering seamless connections with Aeroméxico.
Canadian airline WestJet will launch direct flights between Calgary and Mexico City International Airport (MEX) starting May 14, 2025. The company stated that the service will operate five times weekly in both directions.
Reactivating a Key Connection
The Calgary-Mexico route, last operated in 2018, will connect the business communities of Western Canada and Mexico, offering access to one of North America's largest consumer markets. This route is expected to enhance air cargo capacity, benefiting small businesses and regional exporters.
Daniel Fajardo, WestJet's Vice President of Network Planning, emphasized: "The service between Calgary and Mexico City opens the door for more Western Canadians to explore Mexico's vibrant culture and history while strengthening trade and tourism across North America."
WestJet stated that its group, which includes Sunwing Airlines, will offer flights to 13 destinations in Mexico from 24 Canadian cities in 2025, operating over 200 weekly flights during peak periods. In 2024, WestJet transported over 2.6 million passengers between Canada and Mexico.
The new route benefits from WestJet’s partnership with Aeroméxico, established in 2011. This collaboration allows passengers to connect seamlessly from Mexico City to destinations like Chihuahua, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Mérida, and Monterrey with a single baggage check-in.
Expanding Operations in Calgary
Calgary Airport, WestJet’s primary global hub, will see significant growth in 2025 with the introduction of six new direct routes. According to Chris Dinsdale, President of the Calgary International Airport Authority, "this link between two dynamic cities reinforces Calgary’s strategic position as a global hub."
The new connection also received praise from Mario Morales, Mexico’s Consul in Calgary, who stated that this route "will strengthen cultural, tourism, and economic ties between our countries."
WestJet highlighted that its summer 2025 program, which includes this new route, is now open for bookings.
