The Cuban Ministry of Tourism announced last Monday that Varadero, one of the main resorts on the island, will begin to receive international tourists and flights as of October 15.
The Juan Gualberto Gómez International Airport is the second most important in Cuba after the José Martí International Airport in Havana, with a traffic of more than 1.4 million passengers a year from about twenty Canadian cities and various European destinations.
In recent weeks, its facilities were adapted according to sanitary and biosafety standards to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission among passengers and airport workers. Upon arrival, passengers undergo a PCR test for COVID-19 for free.
The German leisure airline Condor will be one of the first to operate in Varadero, with three weekly frequencies from Frankfurt and Düsseldorf.
«The initial stage foresees a partial opening in which clients will be able to enjoy accommodation in four and five star hotels, maritime excursions, nature excursions and other activities in the area. This phase includes non-hotel activities associated with the marinas Chapelin and Gaviota, gastronomic services, commercial and recreational services, as well as the dolphinarium, among others» said a source from the Ministry of Tourism.
Cuba had already restarted international tourism to Cayo Coco, Cayo Largo, Cayo Santamaría, Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Cruz in July and August.
