Brazilian Authorities Still to Complete Validation Before Ungrounding Boeing 737 MAX

The National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) informs that the release for the return of operations of the Boeing 737 MAX model in Brazil still depends on the completion of the work carried out by the Agency regarding the process of validating project modifications. The objective is to demonstrate that the project with the proposed modifications is safe and meets the necessary airworthiness requirements.

The decision by the American civil aviation authority (FAA), which approves the necessary modifications for the aircraft to be operated in the United States again, released on Wednesday (18/11), was the result of work carried out jointly with ANAC and other civil aviation authorities in the world, in particular the European authority European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Canadian Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA).

Based on this FAA guideline, ANAC will proceed with the final adjustments to complete the validation process for returning the Boeing 737 MAX model in Brazil. After the end of this work, the Brazilian operator of the aircraft, which is currently GOL Linhas Aéreas, must satisfactorily incorporate and demonstrate compliance with all new guidelines, both in terms of design and pilot training.

ANAC’s participation in the validation process

Since April 2019, when Boeing started activities to certify the proposed changes, ANAC has been participating in a group to analyze these studies. In all, about twenty professionals of the Agency, among engineers of diverse specialties and pilots, including flight test crews, participated in the process.

“This effort is an example of cooperation between civil aviation authorities, only a few countries have the experience to certify such a complex system. However, ANAC works with independent assessments to ensure that all necessary requirements will be met in the safe return of the operations of these aircraft in Brazil ”, highlights the substitute CEO of ANAC, Rafael Botelho.
