Aeromexico will resume its flights to Nicaragua starting on July 1, the date on which the Covid-19 health passport will become operational in several countries in the region.
According to what was published by the Vostv portal, the news was announced by the former president of the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (Cosep for its initials in Spanish), José Adán Aguerri.
«We are informed that Aeroméxico will restart operations as of July 1 with flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, which is the same date that the Covid-19 vaccination certificate will begin to function in some countries,» Aguerri wrote in a Facebook post.
So far the only airlines that are currently operating in Nicaragua are Copa Airlines and Avianca, what would convert Aeroméxico in the third operator with the capacity to connect the Central American country with the world.
Aguerri indicated that the resumption of Aeroméxico operations does not necessarily mean that growth in the tourism sector will be reactivated, because as long as the American airlines do not open and the frequency of trips that the country had before the pandemic recovers, the situation of this industry will stay the same.
«The sector is not going to recover significantly, we are talking about 3 flights a week with a capacity of 99 people, that is, 300 people who will enter as a result of this decision, but it is far from the number of people who used to come to the country, it is necessary to change the biosafety protocol to include the Covid-19 passport, which will begin to be applied in European countries,” Aguerri added.
American Airlines and United Airlines are expected to resume operations in the second half of the year, and Spirit Airlines has no tentative return date yet.
