Category 2 effect: American Airlines adds eleven new routes to Mexico

American Airlines increased the offer of seats to Mexico for June and also adds eleven new routes, reaching 26 destinations in the country.

The summer season pushes US airlines to increase their presence in sunny destinations. In addition, the countries of the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America have put their efforts to reactivate tourism as Americans achieve high immunization rates. Vaccine tourism is also a determining factor in the face of this increase.

A few weeks ago, the FAA downgraded Mexico to Category 2 for “not meeting the ICAO safety standard,” affecting the route opening plans of Mexican airlines. American companies will take advantage of this situation and will go out to gain ground over their neighboring rivals.

Although the categorization does not affect current routes, it does prevent Mexican companies from offering new flights or registering new aircraft to fly on routes to and from the northern neighbor.

The new routes and starting dates:

From To Starting date Frequencies Aircraft
Austin San José del Cabo (SJD) June 5 1 weekly flight A319
Charlotte Puerto Vallarta (PVR) June 5 1 weekly flight A319
Dallas/Fort Worth Acapulco (ACA) June 5 2 weekly flights E175
Dallas/Fort Worth Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo (ZIH) June 5 1 weekly flight E175

Los Ángeles Cancún (CUN) June 5 1 weekly flight B737-800
Miami Cozumel (CZM) June 3 Everyday E175
Phoenix La Paz (LAP) June 4 3 weekly flights CRJ 700

With this incorporation, the company reaches 59 routes with which it connects 26 Mexican destinations. Huatulco and Acapulco return to their network of destinations and add La Paz as a new city to their map.

According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, for this summer season, American Airlines is positioned as the second airline in terms of seat offer with 19.4%. It is narrowly beaten by United with 19.5%, but is ahead of Volaris, which will have 13% this season.
