Honduras: law project to promote low-cost air transportation

With the impulse of the president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, the «Law for the Promotion of Low Cost Air Transportation» was presented to the National Congress yesterday, which aims to reduce up to 40% the value of air tickets to favor the tourism sector and VFR (Visiting Friends and Relatives) trips.

«We are working so that Hondurans can travel well and cheaply. Air tickets may drop by 40%, this will boost mass tourism and employment. Our compatriots abroad will be able to visit their families more frequently,» said the mandatary.

In this sense, the Presidential designee María Antonia Rivera, said that «we are the only government that sends this kind of project to be discussed in the National Congress. With this we seek an alternative to traditional air transport, adding the generation of employment and the increased connectivity of Honduras to the world.»

The official added that they are working for new airlines such as Southwest, Frontier, Alaska Airlines, Eurowings, Viva, Ecuatoriana Airlines and Condor to arrive.

From the National Chamber of Tourism of Honduras they were enthusiastic about the project. Its president, Epaminondas Mariankys, said that «this is good news, as the Executive Power received well the initiative of sending this new law to the National Congress, that will benefit the Honduran people who wish to travel at a low cost.»

«This is aimed at low-cost airlines so that Hondurans and foreigners who want to visit the country do so at very competitive prices» and «will allow a greater flow of passengers to the country and thereby encourage the creation of new jobs. The tourism industry agrees and we urge the president of the National Congress, Mauricio Oliva, and other deputies to approve this law that is of benefit to the Honduran people,» concluded Mariankys.

Currently the Honduran market has an average offer of 165 international flights per week distributed between San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa, Roatán and La Ceiba, according to information obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, a global aeronautical intelligence company.
