Volaris announced that it will begin flying to Colombia with 4 and 3 weekly frequencies starting on Wednesday, October 6 during an event that took place within the framework of the Vitrina Turística ANATO 2021.
Mexico City – Bogotá and Cancún – Bogotá are the first two routes that the Mexican airline will launch in this new market.
The first route, which connects the two capitals, will have 4 weekly frequencies and will be at dawn on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, leaving Mexico at 03:40 AM and arriving in Bogotá at 08:14 AM, to return from Bogotá at 09:14 AM and arrive in Mexico City at 01:48 PM. The operation will be carried out by Airbus A320neos, which have approximately 184 seats depending on the passenger cabin configuration.
The flight between Cancún and Bogotá will have three weekly frequencies and will be overnight on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, leaving Cancún at 09:31 PM and arriving in Bogotá at 01:55 AM the next day, to return from Bogotá at 02:55 AM and arrive in Cancún at 06:24 AM.
Constanza Olaya Cantor, Vice Minister of Tourism of Colombia, was happy after the news that Volaris will begin to fly to South America choosing the coffee country as the first market and stated that “the opening of these new routes by Volaris between Mexico and Colombia becomes great news and an opportunity for many more Mexicans to know all the wealth that we have in our country in terms of tourism and vice versa. Likewise, this exchange of tourists will help us to continue strengthening the path of safe economic reactivation throughout Latin America.”
Tickets will be available from June 23 and their value will start from a base of USD $ 89.99.
Currently, Volaris is the airline with the highest number of passengers transported in Mexico and has an offer of more than 1,000 weekly flights from the capital, 47 active routes and transported more than 50 million passengers since its foundation in 2005, which also ranks it as the principal low-cost in that country.
This announcement comes after Aerocivil authorized Volaris´ flights to Colombia, along with orders placed by its subsidiary in Costa Rica and its main competitor, Viva Aerobus, which together will modify the competitive prospect between Mexico and Colombia, currently dominated by the airlines of the South American country with 60.5% of the seat offer with Avianca (27.1%), Wingo (19.4%) and Viva (14%), while on the Mexican side there is only Aeroméxico with 39.5%.
Observing the programming that is in force for December (which may already be subject to modifications), the participation of Mexican airlines will rise to 47.9%, with the presence of Aeroméxico (28.7%), VivaAerobus (7.4 %) and Volaris (6.9%).
On the Colombian side, both Avianca and Viva program a significant increase in the offer, with the first taking weekly flights from 7 to 21 between Bogotá and Mexico City, and from 7 to 14 between Bogotá and Cancún, in addition to three between Cancún and Medellín. Viva for its part will add a weekly flight on the Medellín – Cancún and Bogotá – Mexico City routes, having four in each one, and will start flying between Medellín and Mexico with also four weekly flights.
