Portugal implements «carbon tax» on passengers
The National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC for its initials in Spanish) of Portugal confirmed last week that, since July 1, 2021, the issuance of commercial air transport tickets for passengers, departing from airports and aerodromes located in Portuguese territory, is subject to a carbon tax, in exchange for polluting emissions from the sector and other negative environmental effects.
This rate is provided for in Ordinance No. 38/2021, of February 16, which taxes passengers of air transport with a fixed value of 2 euros, being charged by the airlines that carry out the commercialization of a transport ticket for flight commercial, without prejudice to the legally foreseen exemptions, according to what was reported by our associated media in Brazil, Aeroin.net.
The proceeds will be delivered to the Portuguese Civil Aviation Authority after the respective passenger has boarded. The conditions of application and the procedures for the fulfillment of the obligations can be consulted by the airlines on the website of the Portuguese regulatory authority.
The registration form of the airlines and the respective filling instructions are available at the address https://txcarbono.anac.pt from July 1, 2021. Companies must update the information to the Portuguese ANAC every month until on the 5th of the following month, reporting the previous month.
