The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, offered Aeroméxico the possibility of acquiring the presidential plane Boeing 787. This offer comes after more than two years of trying to sell the presidential plane, with registration TP-01 and called «José María Morelos y Pavón». The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 registration XC-MEX, was acquired in the government of Felipe Calderón. López Obrador announced when he assumed the presidency that he planned to get rid of it, and would even agree to exchange it for medical supplies.
In a meeting with executives from Aeroméxico and Delta, a partner of the Mexican company, the president commented «I took the opportunity to offer them the plane: let it be managed by Aeroméxico and that they can use it for executive trips or parties.» According to López Obrador, the company directors «are thinking about it.»
Aeroméxico operates a fleet made up exclusively of Boeing 787s on its long-range routes.
In a press conference, the Mexican premier commented: «We are having a hard time selling it (the aircraft). At this moment it is better for us to have it on the ground, because if we used it, the transfer would cost us a lot.» The head of the Executive emphasized that he seeks to sell the presidential plane but «without giving it away.» An evaluation by the Mexican government priced the aircraft at 2,500 million pesos (approximately 125 million dollars).
