Late last year Eastern Airlines confirmed the start of flights between Miami and Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. The company is scheduled to operate twice a week on Boeing 767-200(ER) aircraft, configured with 218 seats.
In this announcement, in addition to the Bolivian city, Buenos Aires was also included as a new destination for the airline. However, the Argentine capital never appeared in the reservation system.
For officially unknown reasons, Eastern Airlines canceledEastern Airlines schedules flights to Santa Cruz de la Sierra, according to information obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium. operations between Miami and Santa Cruz de la Sierra, a market dominated by Boliviana de Aviación. American Airlines previously had flights to La Paz and Santa Cruz, but they were suspended.
Bolivia’s state-owned carrier operates eight weekly flights between Miami and Santa Cruz de la Sierra on its Boeing 737-800 or Boeing 767-300, depending on flight demand. Boliviana de Aviación’s main competitor in operations to the United States is Copa Airlines, with a stopover in Panama City.
According to information obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, Eastern Airlines plans to start flights between Miami and Santa Cruz de la Sierra as of November 14. As per the schedule announced in December 2020, the company plans to operate the route on Boeing 767-200s.
The U.S. airline would have three weekly flights between both cities. With this schedule, Eastern Airlines plans to offer 700 seats per week between Miami and Santa Cruz de la Sierra and vice versa.
If the flights finally commence, these will be Eastern’s first scheduled operations to Bolivia. For much of 2020, with repatriation flights, the company operated to and from Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

Santa Cruz de la Sierra would be Eastern Airlines’ fourth destination in its network from the United States. Current destinations include Asuncion, Guayaquil and Montevideo, with Belo Horizonte scheduled to be added in December.
