Last March we had reported that Lufthansa was planning to resume operations to Rio de Janeiro as of June 1. The flights were planned to be operated on Airbus A340-300s, with a capacity for 279 passengers.
Lufthansa’s last operations to the Brazilian city were in March last year, prior to the suspensions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The company flew to and from Frankfurt on Boeing 747-400(ER) aircraft, configured with 371 seats in four classes.
Due to restrictions and its impact on demand, the airline will return to Rio de Janeiro on October 2. The operations will be carried out in Airbus A340s, the same aircraft they planned to use with the tentative schedule starting in June.
According to current information, Lufthansa will have three weekly flights between the two cities. The company will offer 837 seats per week between Frankfurt and Rio de Janeiro and vice versa.

This entire schedule is subject to change in the coming weeks, as it will depend on the COVID-19 situation in Europe and Latin America, travel restrictions and their impact on demand.
Rio de Janeiro currently has fewer connections to and from Europe compared to February/March 2020. KLM, Air France and TAP are the only carriers to operate to Galeão airport from the Netherlands, France and Portugal respectively.
