Mercado Libre plans aircraft and routes increase in South America
Mercado Libre, the Argentinean company, currently with four airplanes flying its traditional colors, two in Brazil and two in Mexico, is considering increasing its presence in South American airports with dedicated routes for its cargo.
In an interview with Diario Financiero, Pablo Navarrete, who heads the air operation called MeLi Air with a team that also includes Argentineans Josue Gil and Santiago Elijovich, commented that the company is already thinking of having similar operations in Colombia and Chile. This positioning differentiates it from the company’s plans announced months ago, when executives commented that, at the time, there was no intention to explore air cargo in other countries.
In Brazil, the airline Mercado Livre (name of the local operation in Portuguese) has the special attribute of being a «virtual company», since the entire operation is handled by partner companies, such as Sideral Linhas Aéreas, while the cargo is placed by Mercado Livre and the routes defined by them.
According to Mercado Libre, Meli Air helps reduce package delivery times, in addition to increasing next-day delivery capacity for purchases of products stored in the São Paulo and Bahia Distribution Centers.
