Singapore Airlines announced the expansion of the order for forty GE9X engines it placed in 2017. The contract, valued at an additional $2.8 billion, will bring the total number of engines to be received by the airline to 62.

Also included in the deal is a service contract under which GE will maintain the airline’s powerplants for 12 years.

Singapore Airlines has 31 Boeing 777-9s on order and is expected to be the launch customer for the model in the Asia-Pacific region. GE9X program general manager Mike Hoffmeister cited the airline’s long-standing relationship with Boeing and GE: “Singapore Airlines has been a long-standing customer and we are proud to continue our relationship.”

Lau Hwa Peng, senior vice president of engineering at Singapore Airlines, added: “The cutting-edge technologies that have been incorporated into the Boeing 777-9 and GE9X engines will help Singapore increase its operational efficiency. Will also help reduce fuel consumption, and substantially lower our carbon emissions.

The GE9X will help achieve Boeing’s operational benchmarks for the 777X, which promises operating costs 10% lower than any other aircraft in its class. To achieve this, the engine is developed with the latest available technologies. This includes ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials, additively manufactured parts (3D printing), and fuel-efficient combustors. In addition, it offers the lowest NOx emissions in its class and is the quietest engine GE has ever built.
