Raquel Sánchez, Spain’s Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, announced last Wednesday (May 25th) a comprehensive project for the complete remodeling of the terminal area of Tenerife South-Reina Sofía International Airport (TFS), in the autonomous community of the Canary Islands.
The official informed that Aena, the public company that manages the country’s main airports, will put out to tender the drafting of the project for an amount of 8 million euros. This development will be included in the Airport Regulation Document that will come into force in 2026 (DORA III). The remodeling will involve an initial investment of more than 300 million euros.
The announcement was made during the inauguration of the new building that links terminals 1 and 2 of the airport. To this end, Aena invested 160 million euros between 2017 and 2021, both in the expansion and improvement of the sectors and in the adaptation of the rest of the infrastructures and processes.
As part of DORA II, currently in force, Aena will continue to invest 171 million euros and incorporate a total of 22 service quality measurement indicators, including six environmental ones associated with the company’s Climate Action Plan. The goal of the initiative is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2026 and zero emissions by 2040.
The addition of the new facilities increased the terminal area by 50,000 square meters. Space increased by 55%, from 90,000 square meters to 140,000. This increase will provide the capacity to handle a volume of up to 16 million passengers per year. In total, the air station’s operational capacity will increase by 20%.
In addition, Terminal 2 incorporated check-in module C, which has 32 new counters. Check-in stations increased from the previous 86 to the 118 currently available.
The security checkpoint area was also improved. Tenerife South airport now has 18 inspection lines, three more than the original sector, which will be dismantled. The entire process is now centralized in a single access and on the same level as the check-in and boarding sectors.
The number of boarding gates has been increased from 16 to 26. Two new aircraft access gates have been installed, bringing the total number of operational gates of this type to ten. Before entering the sector, passengers pass through a unified document control area with six positions occupied by members of the National Police and another twelve for biometric and fingerprint control.
Finally, the area for commercial use increased from 7,500 to 9,300 square meters. The airport will have the largest duty-free shopping area in the entire Aena network.
