On Tuesday, June 14th, Latvian airline airBaltic announced that it will offer services between Riga International Airport (RIX) and Marrakech-Menara Airport (RAK), Morocco, starting October 31th.
«We are excited to announce our first ever scheduled route to Africa», said Martin Gauss, CEO of the company. «As the leading airline in the Baltics, we continue to build our network, adding more exciting leisure destinations also for the winter season», he added.
Initially, airBaltic will offer two weekly frequencies in both directions. The flights will be operated by Airbus A220-300 aircraft. Since May 2020, the company has been operating all of its services with this aircraft model. The homogenization of the fleet favors the optimization of resources and reduces operating costs.
Thanks to their performance and versatility, both the A220-100 and the A220-300 became an attractive and popular choice among operators since they entered the market, in 2016. One example of this is the aircraft’s use on widely disparate routes.
Weekly service between Riga (RIX) and Tenerife South (TFS) is currently the longest route served by the airline. The Latvian capital and the Spanish island are 4.511 kilometers apart. On the other hand, the shortest daily route connects Riga (RIX) with Palanga (PLQ), in Lithuania, 212 kilometers away.
The new flights to Marrakech will cover 3.735 kilometers and will become one of airBaltic’s longest routes.
