The Management of José María Córdova International Airport of Rionegro (MDE) informed that the Mexican low-cost airline Viva Aerobus will no longer operate regular passenger services from the air terminal. The airline served routes to Cancun (CUN) and Mexico City (MEX) and made its last flight on June 9, 2022.
Management received a communiqué from the company informing of the decision to cancel its operations in Medellín (MDE). Javier Andrés Benítez, manager of the air terminal, stated that he regrets this situation, thanks its directors, and reiterates that they will always be welcome at the Rionegro Airport.
The Mexican airline is attending all passengers who suffered inconveniences due to the cancellation of these flights through its regular channels.
Viva Aerobus started operations between Mexico and Medellin (MDE) on April 8, 2022, with ten weekly flights and offering 3,720 seats per week between two routes. According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, this was the second destination of the company in Colombia, now with this change the airline will focus its operations at El Dorado Airport (BOG).
In Bogota (BOG) the low-cost carrier offers daily flights from Mexico City (MEX) and Cancun (CUN) and expects to add a new service by November of this year to Guadalajara (GDL), where it will be the only air connection from the State of Jalisco to South America.

According to data obtained through the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) between January – April 2022, 603,817 passengers were mobilized between Mexico and Colombia with an occupancy factor of 71.1% in 4,601 flights. Viva Aerobus is the fifth largest operator with a market share of 11.6%.
Medellin (MDE) is the second main Colombian destination in the Aztec country, representing a 24.9% share of the market. Between January and April of this year, 136,985 passengers and 161.2 tons of cargo were transported between the capital of Antioquia and Mexico in 1,155 air operations, representing an increase of 298.4%, 40.78% and 275%, respectively.
