On Saturday (2), Air Canada resumed flights between Vancouver (YVR) and Brisbane (BNE) with four weekly operations. This is the airline’s second destination in Australia and the only non-stop service between Queensland and Canada: the airline’s last service on this route was in March 2020.

The AC flight was operated in a Boeing 787 Dreamliner registered with the registration C-FVNB, the aircraft took off from YVR at 12:40 local time and landed at BNE at 07:48 the following day.

According to data obtained through the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development, 143,750 passengers and 2,147.2 tonnes of cargo were moved between Brisbane and Vancouver from June 2018 to June 2019.

With the return of Air Canada, Vancouver becomes the 20th international destination for Brisbane Airport (BNE) since the opening of Australia’s borders. BNE is the main gateway for Queensland and overseas visitors will have the option to connect to cities such as the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Bundaberg, and Cairns.

“Not only will these flights bring 60 000 tourists to Queensland each year: they are also crucial to boosting trade between Queensland and Canada,” according to Gert-Jan de Graaff, chief executive officer of Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC).

“They will enable Queensland farmers to export meat and fresh produce directly to Vancouver and beyond. Previously, perishable products had to travel through Sydney, which extended delivery times. The 787-9 can carry up to 11 tons of cargo, which Queensland exporters will be able to take advantage of.”

Air Canada is partnering with Virgin Australia Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer members can now earn Velocity Points and Status Credits and redeem them on eligible flights with the Canadian flag carrier between Brisbane and Vancouver and beyond.

“Vancouver International Airport exclusively offers Air Canada passengers the opportunity to continue on to cities in Canada without re-checking baggage or going through additional security screening,” said Vic Naughton, Air Canada’s general manager for Australia and New Zealand.

“Passengers continuing on to the U.S. also do not need to collect and recheck bags in transit, unlike when transiting through airports in the U.S. They simply pass through U.S. customs and immigration clearance facilities with few YVR people, and then continue to their final destination. This is how Air Canada can once again offer the fastest service between Brisbane and New York, as well as other U.S. cities such as Seattle,” Naughton added.
