Global Crossing Airlines, known as GlobalX, has signed an agreement with aircraft leasing company Icelease for the conversion of an Airbus A321 from its original passenger version to a freighter version.
As agreed by both companies, aircraft with manufacturer’s serial number (MSN) 2840 will be converted to P2F (Passenger-to-Freighter) version and leased to the charter operator for a period of eight years.
Currently, the aircraft operates for GlobalX in its original passenger configuration. The conversion will be carried out at Precision Aircraft Solutions, a company specialising in this type of process, from October 2023. The aircraft could begin flying in its new configuration in April 2024.
«We are delighted to be working with the team at Icelease, whom I have known for many years», said Ed Wegel, Chairman and CEO of GlobalX. «They understand our business, think creatively, move decisively and will continue to work with us on additional A321 freighter transactions», he noted.
The operator offers ACMI (provision of aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance) and charter services in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean. However, it has recently begun to invest money in aircraft conversions to enter the air cargo market, one of the most promising in the industry.
In March this year, the company finalised a long-term lease order for two Airbus A321 P2F from Petrus Aerovista A321 Holdings LCC, a joint venture between Aerovista and Petrus Aviation. In addition, it signed a letter of intent with ST Engineering for the lease of five aircraft in May 2021.
