Turkish Airlines presented its financial results for the first half of 2022, where it obtained net profits, and took the opportunity to detail the destinations it would seek to launch in the coming months.

The company revealed that it obtained revenues of USD 7.6 billion, an increase of 27.5% compared to the same period of 2019, and net profit of USD 664 million against losses of USD 193 million in the first half of 2019.

After those profits, Turkish would add six cities in Europe, three in Africa, two in Asia, two in North America and one in the Middle East. The airline remains one of the most cosmopolitan airlines in the world, connecting 50 Turkish cities and 284 cities on four continents, excluding Oceania and Antarctica.

North America

The two destinations Turkish plans to add are to the United States: Denver (DEN) and Detroit (DTW). In the last year, the company has added three destinations in that country: Newark (EWR) in May 2021, Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) in September 2021 and Seattle (SEA) in June 2022.

It also operates in Atlanta (ATL), Boston (BOS), Houston (IAH), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA), New York (JFK), San Francisco (SFO) and Washington/Dulles (IAD) in the United States, totaling 272 flights per week and offering 88,000 seats.

According to the company, in the entire North American region, including Canada and Mexico, it accumulated 1,875,584 passengers in the first seven months of 2022, being a growth of 37.70% against the same period of 2019.

Europe

It has added four of routes in Europe this year, after opening Kaliningrad (KGD), Perm (PEE) and Moscow/Domodedovo (DME), Russia; and Tivat (TIV), Montenegro. Europe will be the region where it will add the most destinations with six new cities:

  • Krakow (KRK), Poland.

It would be the company’s second destination in Poland, currently operating a daily flight to Warsaw/Chopin (WAW).

  • A Coruña (LCG), Spain.

It is the only airline with scheduled flights between Turkey and Spain. Turkish Airlines operates in Barcelona (BCN) with 21 weekly flights, Malaga (AGP) with 14 weekly flights, Valencia (VLC) with 10 weekly flights and Bilbao (BIO) with four weekly flights. During the first seven months of 2022 it moved 601,466 passengers between the two countries, a recovery of 90%, when it transported 663,541 passengers in the same period, according to AENA Estadisticas.

  • Nantes-Atlantique (NTE), France.

It would be the eighth destination in France and would compete with Transavia. Turkish Airlines operates, in that country, to Paris/Charles de Gaulle (CDG) with 45 weekly flights, Lyon (LYS), Marseille (MRS) and Nice (NCE) with 14 weekly flights each destination; Toulouse (TLS) with one daily flight, (BOD) Bordeaux with four weekly flights and Strasbourg (SXB) with three weekly flights.

  • Lankaran (LLK), Azerbaijan.

It would be the fourth destination in Azerbaijan, has flights to Baku (GYD) with four daily flights, and a weekly flight to Ganka (GYD) and Nakchivan (NAJ).

  • Palermo (PMO), Italy.

The company currently operates in six Italian destinations, flying to Bologna (BLQ) with 14 weekly flights, Bari (BRI) with 4 weekly flights, Catania (CTA) with 7 weekly flights, Milan/Malpensa (MXP) with four daily flights, Naples (NPA) with three weekly flights, Rome/Fiumicino (FCO) with four daily flights, and Venice (VCE) with 14 weekly flights.

  • Makhachkala (MCX), Russia.

After the Russian invasion in Ukraine, the demand between Turkey and Russia has grown exponentially, since Istanbul (IST) has become the major link between the Eurasian giant and Europe, and Turkey is also a tourist hub for Russia. Turkish Airlines has taken advantage of the situation to increase its offer, adding Kaliningrad (KGD), Perm (PEE) and Moscow/Domodedovo (DME) from the resort city of Antalya (ATY).

The company operates from Ankara (ESB), Antalya (AYU), Bodrum (BJV), Dalaman (DLM) and Istanbul (IST) to 10 Russian cities: Kazan (KZN), Chelyabinsk (CEK), Moscow-Vnukovo (VKO), Omsk (OMS), St. Petersburg (LED), Surgut (SGC) and Tyumen (TJM), plus the three new destinations mentioned above.

Turkish Airlines continues to extend the suspension of its flights to Sochi (AER), Rostov-on-Don (ROV), Yekaterinburg (SVX) and Krasnodar (KRR) to September 30, in view of the approaching conflicts in Ukraine.
