Turkish Airlines commenced its flights to Santiago (SCL), Chile, from Istanbul (IST), Turkey, with a stopover in São Paulo/Guarulhos (GRU), after initiating ticket sales in September 2024.

The airline had revealed that Santiago (SCL) would be one of its new medium-term destinations in a report published in September 2022. However, the following year, the president of Turkish Airlines, Ahmet Bolat, stated during a press conference held at the 79th Annual General Meeting of IATA in Istanbul that, for the time being, Santiago de Chile was not being considered as part of its Latin American network, citing a lack of sufficient and suitable aircraft to serve the route non-stop.
Nevertheless, at the beginning of 2024, the Chilean National Tourism Service (SERNATUR) announced that it had held meetings with representatives of the airline.
After several months of speculation, the company landed in the Chilean capital at 09:31 this Thursday. The flight was welcomed by high-ranking officials from the airline, DGAC, the airport concessionaire, and others. Although the inaugural flight was carried out with one of its Boeing 777-300ERs, the company will operate four weekly flights using its Airbus A350-900 aircraft, configured with 329 seats, providing a total of 2,632 seats per week.

The new schedule will replace the current TK 194/193 flight that operates four times a week between São Paulo and Turkey. In total, Turkish will maintain its eleven weekly flights between Guarulhos and Istanbul.
The Chilean capital will thus gain access to Turkish Airlines&#8217; network of 347 destinations, primarily connecting with Europe, East Asia, Central Asia, and Africa. However, the cargo division of the company operates weekly in Santiago during the peak season with its Boeing 777 Freighter.
<h3>Turkish Airlines sets a record upon arrival in Chile</h3>
Santiago becomes Turkish Airlines&#8217; ninth destination in Latin America, after Buenos Aires (Argentina), São Paulo (Brazil), Bogotá (Colombia), Havana (Cuba), Mexico City and Cancún (Mexico), Panama City (Panama), and Caracas (Venezuela). The Turkish carrier also announced that Lima (Peru) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) will be the next destinations in the region.
Moreover, the arrival in Chile allowed the airline to achieve a record, earning the certification of Guinness World Records as the airline flying to the most countries in the world.

The company will compete in the market between Santiago and São Paulo, currently dominated by LATAM (70 weekly flights) and SKY (10). According to the Chilean Civil Aviation Board (JAC), this is the country&#8217;s third most important international route, with 663,476 passengers transported during the first half of 2024.

Turkish Airlines lands in Chile

<a style="color: #3366ff;" href="https://www.aireuropa.com/">Air Europa</a> will become the second Spanish airline to launch flights to Turkey, connecting Madrid (MAD) and Istanbul (IST) starting May 12, 2025.
With this new route, it will join Vueling, which links Barcelona (BCN) and Istanbul (IST). Additionally, it will also become the 109th airline to operate at Istanbul International Airport.
Air Europa will break the duopoly of Turkish companies Turkish Airlines and Pegasus in Madrid. Initially, the airline will offer four weekly flights, increasing the frequency to daily starting July 7, 2025. These flights will be operated with Boeing 787-9 aircraft, configured with between 333 and 339 seats, providing a capacity of 4,746 seats per week.

Turkish Airlines flies from Istanbul (IST) to Barcelona (25 weekly flights), Madrid (24), Málaga (14), Valencia (14), and Bilbao (7), making it the leading airline in Spain.
Meanwhile, Pegasus operates from Sabiha Gökçen to Barcelona (10 weekly flights), Madrid (11), and Seville (5). Finally, SunExpress operates weekly flights from Izmir (ADB) to Madrid and Barcelona.

Air Europa Launches Flights Between Madrid and Istanbul Starting May 2025

Turkish Airlines inaugurated its operations to Sydney with flights via Kuala Lumpur, becoming the airline&#8217;s second destination in Australia after Melbourne. The service started with a frequency of four weekly flights, offering Australian travelers greater connectivity to Turkey, Europe, and more than 350 destinations worldwide, according to the company.
Starting in June 2025, the airline will increase its frequency to five weekly flights, reflecting the growing demand for this route. Additionally, Turkish Airlines plans to incorporate the Airbus A350-1000 into its fleet in 2026, enabling direct flights between Istanbul and Australia.

Sydney’s Kingsford Smith International Airport, which handles 38% of air traffic between Australia and Europe, has established itself as the region&#8217;s main international gateway. With the arrival of Turkish Airlines, it is the only Australian airport with operations from two European airlines.
According to Destination NSW, this new service will generate over 53 million Australian dollars in visitor spending during its first year of operation and support the creation of more than 290 local jobs in New South Wales.

Lima will become Turkish Airlines tenth destination in Latin America, a strategic decision considering Peru&#8217;s tourism potential, with world-renowned attractions such as Cusco and Machu Picchu. Lima, as a significant regional hub, is expected to offer strong profitability for the airline, capitalizing on the increasing tourist traffic.
Furthermore, Murat Seker, CFO of Turkish Airlines, disclosed during a quarterly financial conference that the company&#8217;s growth will not stop here, with new destinations planned, including Phnom Penh in Cambodia. In the United States, new routes to Denver and Detroit are already showing promising operational results.
While a direct flight between Istanbul and Lima seems unlikely due to market restrictions, a connection via a stopover is a practical solution. Initially, a stopover in São Paulo is expected, similar to the current routes to Santiago and Bogotá. This approach enables Turkish Airlines to maximize flight occupancy while addressing the growing passenger demand.
Although adding Ecuador to Turkish Airlines routes isn&#8217;t currently planned, the airline&#8217;s ongoing expansion in the region suggests further developments may arise in the future.

Turkish Airlines Adds Peru to Its Network Amid Regional Growth Plans

BOC Aviation Limited announced the allocation of six Airbus A321NEO aircraft to its current customer, Turkish Airlines. The six aircraft are from the Company&#8217;s order book and are scheduled for delivery in 2027.
“Turkish Airlines is one of our longest-standing customers, and this transaction is a testament to the strength of that relationship,” stated Steven Townend, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director.
“We are seeing strong demand for these state-of-the-art aircraft, and this will underpin our growth in the coming years,” he added.

Six Airbus A321NEOs to Join Turkish Airlines Fleet in 2027 via BOC Aviation

The Turkish Air Force is preparing to incorporate a new fighter jet into its fleet. Defense Minister Yaşar Güler confirmed that Germany has authorized the acquisition of 40 Eurofighter Typhoons after a prolonged period of negotiations.
The Eurofighter Typhoon, manufactured by a European consortium that includes Germany, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, and Italy, will bolster the Turkish fleet, complementing the F-16 fighters and replacing the outdated McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II.
Tensions between Turkey and Germany, stemming from the purchase of Russian-made S-400 air defense systems, had stalled the sale. However, with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan&#8217;s pledge not to use the S-400 — and even consider donating it to Ukraine — relations with NATO allies have normalized. This also allowed the United States to greenlight the sale and upgrade of the F-16s to the Viper standard (Block 70/72).
According to Güler, and as reported by our associated site Aeroin, the constructive support of allies such as Spain, Italy, and the United Kingdom was key in unlocking Germany&#8217;s authorization. However, no specific details about the contract have been announced yet, such as the start date of deliveries, the weapons package, or the estimated value of the agreement.

Turkey’s Fighter Fleet Expansion: Eurofighter Typhoon Acquisition Confirmed

<a href="http://aviacionline.com/2024/05/turkish-airlines-resumed-flights-to-afghanistan-after-nearly-three-year-hiatus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Turkish Airlines</a> will ground over 40 Airbus A321neo aircraft due to issues with <a href="http://aviacionline.com/2024/03/icelandair-elige-motores-gtf-de-pratt-whitney-para-equipar-hasta-35-a320neo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pratt &amp; Whitney engines</a>. This significant reduction in the Turkish airline&#8217;s fleet has been coordinated with the engine manufacturer.
Pratt &amp; Whitney announced in 2023 that it would proceed to withdraw hundreds of GTF engines, which power the Airbus A320neo family, A220, and the Embraer E-jet-E2.
The decision was made after Pratt &amp; Whitney identified components prone to premature failure due to defects from the metal powder manufacturing process. This measure will affect around 350 aircraft, which will be grounded between 2024 and 2026.
Currently, Turkish Airlines has 44 Airbus A321 neo, of which 20 are already stored. These aircraft are being inspected by the airline, although they will need to undergo scheduled maintenance.
Globally, a substantial number of engines, approximately between 600 and 700, are scheduled for early inspections.
<h2>Other Affected Airlines</h2>
One of the major airlines impacted by the Pratt &amp; Whitney engine issues is Indigo. The airline has stated that 35 of its aircraft remain grounded and will not return to service for now.
Mexican airline VivaAerobus will have to ground between 15% and 20% of its fleet. The airline received authorization to operate leased aircraft under wet leasing to mitigate the adverse effects of the GTF engine crisis.
Spirit Airlines could receive compensation ranging from 150 to 200 million dollars due to issues with Pratt &amp; Whitney&#8217;s PW1000G engine family.
Air New Zealand has updated its flight operations due to changes in the maintenance schedule announced by Pratt &amp; Whitney. The airline faces challenges from the revealed condition affecting its Geared Turbo Fan (GTF) engine fleet.

LATAM Airlines Brazil this week expanded its codeshare partnership with Turkish Airlines to include additional routes between Europe and Istanbul operated by Turkish Airlines.

LATAM expands codeshare with Turkish and includes more routes between Europe and Istanbul

Turkish leisure airline SunExpress will start connecting Izmir to Madrid for the Summer season of 2024. The new route was added this weekend in the weekly schedule changes of <a href="http://cirium.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cirium&#8217;s Diio Mi application</a>.
The coastal city in Western Turkey will be connected to Madrid twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, with the airline&#8217;s Boeing 737-800, which can carry up to 189 passengers.
SunExpress has also loaded changes to its route connecting Izmir to Barcelona, the one that, up until now, was its only one to and from Spain. Next Summer, on its peak between June and September, the route will be flown three times instead of the two weekly frequencies of the previous season.
This year, the route was started on June, and for 2024 the flight already had a weekly frequency loaded on Cirium from January to March. The weekend&#8217;s update added the flights from April. Flights in both routes are already available on SunExpress&#8217; website.
SunExpress is a leisure-focused joint venture between Lufthansa Group and Turkish Airlines, with <a href="https://investor.turkishairlines.com/documents/presentations/ir-presentation-3q23.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">each company owning half of the airline</a>. Its fleet, <a href="https://www.planespotters.net/airline/SunExpress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Planespotters.net</a>, is currently composed of 49 Boeing 737-800, eleven 737 MAX 8 and six Airbus A320 wet-leased from Avion Express.
Regular traffic between Turkey and Spain is currently served by three airlines: Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines and AnadoluJet, the low-cost branch of Turkish Airlines. A majority of the capacity is channelled through Istanbul&#8217;s main airport, where Turkish Airlines has its hub, providing connectivity beyond Turkey.
Pegasus connects Madrid to Istanbul&#8217;s second-largest airport, Sabiha Gökçen, while SunExpress has the two routes from Spain to Izmir.

As of this weekend&#8217;s Cirium update, for the third quarter of 2024 traffic in ASKs between the two countries is expected to be 5.2% higher versus the same period this year. This figure, however, is still subject to change.

SunExpress to fly between Izmir and Madrid

Thai Airways and Turkish Airways signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Istanbul to launch a Joint Venture: a significant step to optimize the partnership between the flag carriers of Thailand and Turkey.
Istanbul is one of the most important European hubs and has a strategic location to connect passengers from Asia, Europe and Africa, as Turkish Airlines provides worldwide connectivity from its hub.
Chai Eamsiri, CEO of Thai Airways, said: «This cooperation will enhance the efficiency of THAI and Turkish Airlines in terms of connectivity and route network. Our customers will be able to travel conveniently between Thailand and Turkey, as well as to Europe and other points in Asia, taking full advantage of the extensive networks offered by THAI and Turkish Airlines.»
Thai Airways will introduce a daily service to Istanbul from its Bangkok &#8211; Suvarnabhumi hub in December, which will complement the two daily flights offered by Turkish Airlines and enhance Thai&#8217;s position as the gateway airline to Thailand, the Asia &#8211; Pacific region and Australia. In addition, this partnership will promote tourism between Thailand and Turkey.
Thai Airways and Turkish Airlines will work in a Joint Venture to optimize the synergies that this strategic partnership brings to both airlines. The executive teams, along with the CEOs of both airlines, committed to this strengthened partnership at a meeting in Istanbul on August 2, 2023. The collaboration will provide an expanded network of destinations in Europe and Asia for passengers of the Thai and Turkish flag carriers.

Thai Airways and Turkish Airlines agree on a major strategic partnership

In a bid to significantly boost passenger comfort, Turkish Airlines is set to revamp the business class experience in its Boeing 777 fleet.<a href="https://www.executivetraveller.com/news/turkish-airlines-777-new-business-class" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> In a recent interview with Executive Traveller,</a> Turkish Airlines Chairman Ahmet Bolat outlined plans to provide passengers with «full privacy» and direct aisle access.
Currently, the 2-3-2 business class layout in the 777s has faced criticism for its lack of privacy and the unpopular &#8216;middle seat&#8217;. The proposed upgrade aims to rectify these shortcomings. The new design, exclusively developed by Turkish Airlines&#8217; Turkish Cabin Interior (TCI) arm, aims to transform the in-flight experience.
<h2>Maximizing Comfort and Efficiency</h2>
«We&#8217;re upgrading our 777s with our bespoke business class seats,” stated Bolat. The carrier plans to retain a &#8216;high-density&#8217; configuration in lieu of the conventional 1-2-1 layout, thereby maximizing premium seats and ensuring superior comfort.
The design may draw inspiration from the &#8216;Apex suite&#8217; used by Japan Airlines, maintaining a 2-3-2 layout but with increased space between rows. This setup provides all passengers with direct access without compromising on personal space.
The next-gen business class seat, crafted in Turkey, will incorporate modern amenities such as sliding «full privacy» doors, wireless device charging, and large video screens.
<h2>Future Plans</h2>
Bolat didn&#8217;t detail the rollout timeline for the new seats across the 33-strong Boeing 777 fleet. However, he hinted that the updated business class could feature on Turkish Airlines’ future Airbus A350ULR or Boeing 777X jets. These jets aim to connect Istanbul non-stop to international cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Santiago, and Buenos Aires by the end of this decade.

Turkish Airlines Announces Business Class Overhaul for Boeing 777 Fleet

Turkish Airlines and ITA Airways signed a codeshare agreement today, which will become effective from July 2023.
This agreement, they highlighted, will provide more flexibility to passengers in the flight offerings of both companies between Turkey and Italy, by allowing ITA Airways to place their flight numbers on Turkish Airlines&#8217; services between Rome and Istanbul, while Turkish Airlines will do the same on ITA flights from Rome to nine destinations within Italy: Brindisi, Bari, Catania, Florence, Genoa, Palermo, Lamezia Terme, Turin, and Trieste.

Turkish Airlines and ITA Airways Sign Codeshare Agreement

ISTANBUL &#8211; The president of Turkish Airlines, Ahmet Bolat, stated today during a press conference held within the framework of the 79th Annual IATA General Assembly that, for the time being, they are dismissing the addition of Santiago de Chile and Asunción (Paraguay) to their Latin American network, as they lack the necessary and appropriate aircraft to serve them non-stop.

The inaugural service, flight DE 202, was operated on an Airbus A320 bearing the registration LY-HMD. Turkish Airlines confirmed that it will increase its flight frequency between Istanbul, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires as of September 10. The company currently operates four services per week on this route with Airbus A350-900 aircraft configured for 329 passengers.

Turkish Airlines boosts flights to Argentina

After 7 years, Wizz Air resumes service to Istanbul: the low-cost airline will have four new routes from the UK, Hungary and Romania.
The first service was flight W9 4499 on the London/Luton (LTN) &#8211; Istanbul (IST) route which started on March 28. Also, Wizz Air will provide daily flights to Turkey&#8217;s capital city from London/Gatwick (LGW) and Budapest (BUD), complementing with three weekly flights (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) to Iasi, Romania (IAS).

easyJet is expanding its international offering at Manchester (MAN) with a new non-stop service to Istanbul (IST) for the 2023 summer season. Turkey&#8217;s largest metropolis becomes the 156th destination in the low-cost airline&#8217;s extensive network spanning Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
