Avianca’s Boeing 787 incident over the Atlantic: What we know

An Avianca Boeing 787-8, registration N781AV performing flight AV-120 between Bogota (Colombia) and London Heathrow (UK) with 244 passengers and 10 crewmembers,

was en route at 41,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean about 370nm northwest of Lajes, Terceira Island (Portugal), when the crew declared an emergency and decided to divert to Lajes due to a problem with one of the engines (Trent 1000).

As reported by AvHerald, the aircraft descended towards Lajes and landed safely on runway 15 at Lajes approximately one hour after the incident was declared.

Sources indicate that the passengers and crew, among whom there were no injuries, boarded a Wamos Air Air Airbus A330, registration EC-NTX, and were transported to London (Gatwick).

At the time of publication, the aircraft remains on the Portuguese island while Avianca personnel work on the engine to repair/secure it for transfer to a major maintenance facility, if required.
