Spirit Airlines inaugurates service between Texas and Monterrey

On October 6 Spirit Airlines inaugurated its services between Texas and Monterrey (MTY) with two routes from Austin (AUS) and Houston – Intercontinental (IAH). The low-cost airline will offer two daily flights between Texas and Nueva Leon with 5,096 seats per week.

Maricarmen Martinez, Secretary of Tourism of Nueva Leon; Ted Christie, CEO of Spirit, accompanied by other airline and OMA Aeropuertos executives, as well as other guests from the airport community and the press were present at the celebration of these new services.

Spirit Monterrey

Flight NK 2118 was operated in an Airbus A320ceo registered as N628NK, which took off from Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) at 11:56 local time and landed at General Mariano Escobedo Airport (MTY) at 12:55.

The same aircraft performed the company’s first operation between Nuevo Leon and Texas, flight NK 2115 took off from Monterrey (MTY) at 14:49 and landed at Houston – Intercontinental (IAH) at 15:46.

«It is exciting to launch service into Monterrey with a historic route from Austin that provides critical connectivity and a nonstop route from Houston that expands our extensive international service at IAH,» said John Kirby, vice president of network planning.

«Monterrey attracts vacationers, family and friends year-round and is a great addition for our guests looking for high-value options to visit Mexico’s third largest city,» Kirby added.

Flight Scheduling

Spirit’s Nuevo Leon services will be operated on Airbus A320ceo aircraft with 182-seat capacity in a single configuration:

Austin (AUS) – Monterrey (MTY).
  • Flight NK 2118 AUS 11:43 – MTY 12:49 daily flights.
  • Flight NK 2117 MTY 19:12 – AUS 20:21 daily flights.

Houston (IAH) – Monterrey (MTY)

  • Flight NK 2116 IAH 17:05 – MTY 18:21 daily flights.
  • Flight NK 2115 MTY 13:42 – IAH 15:07 daily flights.

«Spirit is a very important partner for OMA. Together with them, we are strengthening connectivity to the United States from Monterrey International Airport to key destinations such as Austin and Houston,» said Ricardo Dueñas, CEO of OMA.

According to data compiled by Aviacionline through the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) 646,026 passengers and 9,483.3 tons of cargo were mobilized in 2019 between Monterrey (MTY) and Texas in 11,063 operations. Texas is the main U.S. market for General Mariano Escobedo Airport (MTY).

With the start of operations in Nuevo Leon, Spirit increases its destination offerings in Mexico by offering a total of four destinations: Cancun (CUN), Puerto Vallarta (PVR) and now Monterrey (MTY). According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, the Miramar-based low-cost airline will offer 38,108 seats per month between the United States and Mexico.
