On December 15 Air India inaugurated flights between Mumbai (BOM) and San Francisco (SFO), the carrier’s third non-stop connection between India and the West Coast of the United States. Currently, the airline offers sixteen weekly flights to the state of California from India’s three major cities and is the only Indian operator in this market.
Flight AI 179, operated by a Boeing 777 registered VT-AEF and named «Vihan», took off from Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM) at 14:30 local time and landed at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) at 17:26, after 15 hours and 48 minutes.
Air India continues to strengthen global connectivity from its Mumbai (BOM) hub with this new service to California, the airline soon added a new route to New York (JFK) with daily flights from February 14 next year, in addition to two new European connections to Frankfurt (FRA) and Paris (CDG) by the first half of 2023.
«The non-stop flight between India’s financial capital and Silicon Valley is a further step towards enhancing the customer experience. With the launch of this route, we will have a weekly availability of forty non-stop flights that will strengthen India’s connectivity with the U.S.,» said Campbell Wilson, CEO, Air India.

- Mumbai – San Francisco Flight AI 179 BOM 14:30 – SFO 17:00 Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
- San Francisco – Mumbai Flight AI 180 SFO 21:00 – BOM 03:40+2 Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
The route will be operated on Boeing 777-200LR aircraft with a capacity of 288 passengers in two classes (28 Business Class/260 Economy) and promotional fares are available from USD 1,200 round trip.

- As of March 27, 2023, the service will increase from three to four weekly flights.
According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, Air India will offer 8,450 weekly seats between India and San Francisco (SFO) in December. In addition, the carrier offers nonstop service in North America from Delhi (DEL) to Newark (EWR), New York (JFK), Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Washington – Dulles (IAD), Toronto – Pearson (YYZ) and Vancouver (YVR) and from Mumbai (BOM) to Newark (EWR).
