As part of a series of protests resulting from the political crisis in the Republic of Peru, the airports of Arequipa and Huancabamba were closed and their operations suspended.
In the latter, closed since Sunday 11, the demonstrations met with strong police resistance and the clashes left two dead. The Arequipa terminal was attacked on the morning of Monday 12 and although the police operation prevented the takeover of the airport, it is not clear when it will be able to return to normal operations.
LATAM said in a statement that it suspended its flights in Arequipa and assured that it «constantly monitors» the situation in Peru to provide information on potential impacts on operations.
Aeropuertos Andinos del Perú, operator of Arequipa Airport, informed that it proceeded to close the terminal after the invasion of a group of protesters who destroyed part of the perimeter fence, damaged security infrastructure and set fire to a control booth.
The concessionaire stated that it is carrying out «the pertinent coordination» with the airlines and the airport community to resume operations in the short term.
This is a developing story.
