This week, air connectivity between Nicaragua and the United States increased by more than 73% with the return of American Airlines and Spirit to Managua (MGA). Now, three airlines will offer flights between the state of Florida and Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA).
Return of American Airlines
On November 30, American resumed operations to the Nicaraguan capital after almost two and a half years. Flight AA 605 boarded 158 passengers with an occupancy rate of 91.9% and was operated in a Boeing 737-800 NG registered with registration number N848NNN, which took off from Miami International Airport (MIA) at 11:03 local time and landed at Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA) at 12:12, after two hours and nine minutes.
Flight Itinerary
- Miami – Managua Flight AA 605 MIA 10:20 – MGA 12:16 daily flights.
- Managua – Miami Flight AA 1774 MGA 13:20 – MIA 16:55 daily flights.
The route will be operated by Boeing 737-800 Next Generation aircraft with a capacity of 172 seats in three classes (16 First Domestic/24 Main Cabin Extra/132 Main Cabin). The company will offer 2,408 weekly seats between Florida and Nicaragua.
Return of Spirit
On December 1, Spirit resumed operations to Managua since its last operation in March 2020. Flight NK 435 boarded 167 passengers at 91.8% occupancy and was operated on an Airbus A320neo registered as N943NK, which took off from Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) at 00:12 local time and landed at Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA) at 01:25, after two hours and 13 minutes.
Flight Itinerary
- Fort Lauderdale – Managua Flight NK 435 FLL 23:50 – MGA 01:28+1 daily flights.
- Managua – Fort Lauderdale Flight NK 434 MGA 02:42 – FLL 06:15 daily flights.
The service will be operated in Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft with a capacity of 182 and 228 passengers, respectively. The low-cost airline will offer 2,870 seats per week and will be the second largest operator in the Managua-US market.
More flights between Nicaragua and the United States
According to data obtained by Aviacionline through Cirium, in December between Nicaragua and the United States there will be an offer of 11,458 weekly seats, this represents an increase of more than 12% compared to pre-pandemic levels. American Airlines and Spirit were the first U.S. airlines to resume operations to Managua.
United is scheduled to return to the Nicaraguan capital in January 2023 with non-stop service from Houston (IAH), being the only destination outside of Florida offered at Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA). The only company that has not announced its return to Nicaragua is Delta Air Lines, which previously operated a weekly flight from Atlanta (ATL).
