The Spanish technological engineering company completed the modernization of two IRS 20-MP/S transportable secondary radars for the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).

The radars are the responsibility of the Rio de Janeiro Aeronautics Electronics Material Park (PAME-RJ), under the coordination of the Radiodetermination Branch (RAD) of the Technical Division. As a conclusion of the project, Field Acceptance Tests (SAT) of the modernization process, electronics, electrical mechanics and structural mechanics, of the two transportable secondary radar units were carried out. One of the units is installed in Petrolina (Pernambuco State) and the other will be installed in Bom Jesus da Lapa (Bahia).

The objective of the modernization is to equip the radar systems with the most advanced digital functionalities, to increase the accuracy and quality of the data collected and to extend their coverage. To this end, it was decided to implement an ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast) signal reception and processing system that will detect aircraft simultaneously with the radar system, thus improving the quality of the signals received and increasing the probability of aircraft detection, in addition to the advantages of lower maintenance costs.

The IRS-20MP/S transportable radars, manufactured by Indra and delivered to the Airspace Control System Implementation Commission (CISCEA) in 2011, have a range of 256 MN (approximately 500 km) and can operate in Mode S, the highest accuracy standard for aircraft identification, as well as act in aircraft approach phases or during en-route flight.

Recently, members of the Commission for the Implementation of Airspace Control Systems (CISCEA) and the Rio de Janeiro Aeronautics Electronics Material Park (PAME-RJ) completed advanced theoretical and practical training in optimization, configuration and plot extraction and tracking of the IRS 20-MP/S radars at Indra’s facilities in Spain.
