Aeromexico Resumes Flights to Tokyo After Three Years, Becomes the Only Latin American Airline Operating in Asia

At 06:39 AM on March 26, Aeromexico flight 58 landed at Narita International Airport in Tokyo, after being suspended for three years due to the pandemic.

The resumption of operations allows Aeromexico to be the only Latin American airline operating in Asia. The company not only connects Japan and Mexico but also with the network of destinations it has in Central and South America.

Aeromexico has Japan Airlines as a codeshare partner, which allows travelers to make domestic connections in Japan from the main hubs of the Japanese airline to destinations such as Osaka, Nagoya, and Fukuoka, among others.

Aeromexico’s flight schedule to Japan:

  • Mexico City-Tokyo flight AM 58 MEX 00:25 – 06:20 (+1) NRT / Daily
  • Tokyo-Mexico City flight AM 57 NRT 14:25 – 12:10 MEX / Daily.

The flights will be operated on Boeing 787-8 with a capacity of 243 passengers in two classes (32 in business and 211 in economy), providing an offer of 3,402 seats per week.

For the time being, the Japanese capital will be the only destination in Asia scheduled by Aeromexico, as its services to Seoul/Incheon (ICN) remain suspended until further notice.

In mid-October 2022, Japan reopened its borders to international travelers, allowing Aeromexico to schedule its return to Tokyo (NRT) for the summer season of 2023 thanks to the increase in passenger demand between Mexico and Japan.

The Mexican company will have to compete with All Nippon Airways on the same route, which offers a daily flight on Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

According to data collected through AFAC (Mexico’s aviation authority), in 2019, 233,723 passengers and 97,144.4 tons of cargo were transported between Mexico City and Tokyo on 1,448 operations. The Japanese capital was the seventh busiest long-haul route at Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX).
