Air Europa Cargo, the air cargo division of the Spanish carrier, strengthened in 2022 on the back of an increase in the volume of goods transported and growth in turnover.
Increase in cargo volume
According to data provided by Globalia, its parent company, it transported 56.6 million kilograms of cargo last year. The figure represents an increase of 78.5% compared to 2021.
The result also represents a marked improvement in turnover compared to 2019, the last full year prior to the start of the pandemic.
Looking ahead to 2023, Air Europa expects to maintain current activity in the cargo market and revenues, as well as to launch new routes.
«The keys to the performance of the air cargo division lie in the commitment to innovation through the digitalisation of processes and the use of a fleet, led by the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, with greater capacity», said Globalia.
Digitalisation of processes
Since the creation of the air cargo division in 2018, the company has been working on the digitisation and optimisation of processes. In May 2022, Air Europa carried out the first cargo flight between Europe and Latin America managed entirely digitally. The operation between Madrid and Montevideo was made possible thanks to the use of Blockchain technology, which made it possible to complete the shipment without printing any paper.
That flight laid the groundwork for the establishment of a stable and more efficient air cargo corridor between Spain and Latin America. The system ensures quality data exchange and streamlines customs procedures, thereby improving the overall efficiency and sustainability of logistics activities.
Air Europa Cargo also digitised its booking processes by incorporating CargoAi’s CargoWALLET platform. The tool optimises the management of available cargo space for better cargo organisation. It is currently incorporating all the countries in the Americas in which the IATA e-Air Waybill standard operates.
Fleet unification and expansion
As part of its expansion plan for early 2022, Air Europa added ten aircraft during the year, including five Boeing 787 Dreamliner: two 787-9 (EC-NVX and EC-NVY) and three 787-8 (EX-NXA EC-NVZ and EC-NZG).
The addition of new airplanes with increased capacity allowed the airline more cargo hold space, resulting in improved profitability and operational efficiency.
