American Airlines Resumes Flights Between Los Angeles and Auckland

American Airlines is expanding its intercontinental network at Los Angeles (LAX) with the reactivation of nonstop service to Auckland (AKL) for the austral summer. This service will complement the airline’s existing daily operation between Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) and New Zealand.

«Kiwi’s upcoming summer season will see the highest level of long-haul flights, airlines and seats since summer 2019. We are delighted to not only return to pre – pandemic levels, but also plan to exceed them with our North American routes as we continue to rebuild connectivity«, said Scott Tasker, Auckland Airport’s director of customer service.

With this new service from American, four airlines will be operating on the Los Angeles – Auckland segment. The Dallas-based airline will compete with Delta, United and Air New Zealand and will be the third largest carrier in this market.

American’s flight schedule between Los Angeles and Auckland

Starts December 21.

  • Los Angeles – Auckland Flight AA 83 LAX 23:50 – AKL 10:25+2
  • Auckland – Los Angeles Flight AA 82 AKL 15:50 – LAX 06:55

Route data

  • In the period from December 21, 2023 to February 14, 2024 the service will operate daily.
  • From February 15, 2024 the schedule is reduced to three flights per week.
  • The route will be operated on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft with a capacity of 285 seats in three classes (30 Business Class/21 Premium Economy/234 Economy).
  • This route has the option of connecting to multiple Australian cities through American’s joint venture partner Qantas.

The Dallas-based airline will offer 7,980 seats per week between the U.S. and New Zealand for the peak austral summer season and will be the leading U.S. carrier in the market in terms of seats per seat kilometer (ASK) offered according to the Cirium platform.

American’s long-haul offering at Los Angeles (LAX) provides nonstop service to Tokyo – Haneda (HND), London – Heathrow (LHR), Sydney (SYD) and soon Auckland (AKL). The carrier last operated between the U.S. West Coast and New Zealand on March 29, 2020.
