Low-cost airlines led Mexico’s domestic market in March, according to traffic data submitted by national carriers. Viva Aerobus and Volaris reported capacity growth and carried more passengers compared to the same month last year.
During the first quarter of 2023, both airlines carried 13 million 384 thousand passengers, 19.4% more than between January and March 2022.

Viva Aerobus carries 1.91 million passengers in March
Viva Aerobus carried 1.91 million passengers during the third month of the year, 21.4% more than during March 2022. The company recorded a 23.7% year-on-year growth in domestic traffic, as well as a 4.3% increase in international traffic.
The average occupancy rate reached 86.2%, just below the 86.8% reported in March 2022. Viva Aerobus said the occupancy rate was 87.7% on domestic flights and 79.8% on international services.
In addition, the airline increased its total capacity, measured in available seat miles (ASM), by 21.6% compared to March 2022. Capacity grew by 23.6% in the domestic market, while it increased by 13.5% in the international market.
«The demand environment remains solid, with March traffic and capacity growing at a healthy pace in both the domestic and international markets», said Juan Carlos Zuazua, CEO of Viva Aerobus.

Volaris carries 2.8 million passengers in March
On the other hand, Volaris carried 2.8 million passengers in March 2023, 12.6% more than during the same month in 2022. The airline reported demand growth of 8.7% in the domestic market, as well as a 35.4% increase in the international market.
Overall, demand increased by 15.7%. On the other hand, Volaris’ total capacity, measured in available seat miles (ASM), grew by 17.1%.
The average occupancy rate reached 85.5%. In March 2022, the company had reported a value of 86.5%. The occupancy rate was 85.9% on domestic flights and 84.5% on international services.
