On the 2nd of June, at 12:00 CET, SAS will launch the availability of seats for its first-ever commercial electric flight in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. This historic inaugural service will have 30 seats available on each of the three scheduled flights, which are expected to take off during 2028.
SAS, founded in 1946, defines itself as a pioneer in the aviation industry, highlighting that it was the first commercial airline to fly over the North Pole to significantly shorten the flight time between continents. «The fact that we can now invite our passengers to the next major milestone in the future of aviation is a natural continuation of that pioneering spirit,» says Anko van der Werff, President & CEO of SAS.
The ticket price for the inaugural flight will be SEK/NOK/DKK 1946 – a tribute to the year when SAS first started flying. Reservations can be made on the website flysas.com/electric starting from June 2nd at 12:00 CET.
SAS details that their goal is to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and that a key component in achieving this goal is the development and use of technological innovations like electric aircraft on shorter trips.
According to SAS, numerous actions are being carried out to reduce CO2 emissions and the climate impact. The airline is supporting innovation and partnerships to find new solutions, investing in more fuel-efficient aircraft, and increasing the production and use of more sustainable aviation fuels.
Among the significant sustainability achievements, SAS highlights its partnership with Airbus in 2019 to facilitate the large-scale use of low and zero-emission commercial aircraft, and its cooperation with Heart Aerospace to drive the development of electric aircraft.
Looking to the future, SAS has ambitious sustainability goals: by 2030, it expects a 50% noise reduction compared to 2010 and for sustainable aviation fuel to equal SAS’ domestic production. By 2050, the company aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions, in line with IATA’s updated ambition.
