Air Europa has signed an agreement with Iryo, a private Spanish high-speed train operator, for the purchase of combined plane and train tickets. Airline passengers will be able to book their combined trips using both modes of transport by the end of 2023.

The contract signing took place at Atocha Station, Madrid, aboard an Iryo train. The event was attended by Iryo’s CEO and general manager, Simone Gorini, and Air Europa’s CEO, Jesús Nuño de la Rosa.

Air Europa’s customers will be able to purchase their combined tickets through the airline’s website or authorized travel agencies. They will be able to combine their flight with the train service to eleven Spanish cities from Madrid. The available destinations will be Barcelona, Tarragona, Zaragoza, Cuenca, Valencia, Albacete, Málaga, Antequera, Córdoba, and Seville. These routes can be connected with more than 33 international destinations in Europe and 21 in America.

Passengers will be considered «connecting passengers», which will allow them access to the benefits and guarantees offered by both companies in their services.

    Sustainable Multimodal Strategy

This agreement includes the train as a sustainable feeder for medium and short distance flights, anticipating measures such as those adopted by France, which prohibit flights of less than 2.5 hours to cities that are connected by train. Additionally, Air Europa expands its destination offerings.

This strategy is crucial to reducing the impact of climate change on travel, which is not only a challenge but also an obligation for everyone. Additionally, both companies strengthen Madrid-Barajas hub and the peninsula’s connectivity with an efficient and sustainable proposal, aimed at satisfying the needs of leisure and business customers.»

In the words of Simone Gorini, «with this alliance, we strengthen Iryo’s strategic role in Spain’s connectivity with Europe and America. Thanks to this agreement we are working on, we take another step in mobility, with comprehensive solutions that allow a more complete and sustainable transportation experience.»

«For Iryo, it is an honor to have Air Europa as our first partner in a rail-plane association, bringing us closer to achieving more integrated and sustainable mobility that puts the customer experience, innovation, and environmental protection at the center,» added Gorini.

On his part, Jesús Nuño de la Rosa highlighted: «the importance of connectivity as part of our mission as a company. We constantly work to offer comprehensive solutions to our customers for their travel needs, which is why this agreement with Iryo is strategic and will allow us to offer all possible options to improve mobility through a complete, efficient, and sustainable experience.»

«Beginning this new journey with the new player in the Spanish high-speed railway sector, with as much growth potential in the market as Iryo, makes us very happy and we trust to continue working together for many more years,» added
