Delta Air Lines is expanding its South Pacific operations by doubling its flights between Los Angeles and Sydney for the austral summer. This represents a 40% increase in capacity when compared to last year’s season.
Delta rolls out its largest transatlantic schedule in its history with 77 routes in 32 destinations
The airline will offer 8,562 seats per week between Los Angeles and Sydney from mid-December, making it the leading carrier in this segment during the peak season, competing with Qantas, American Airlines and United Airlines.
Delta has a codeshare partnership with REX Airlines that gives passengers the ability to connect more to destinations beyond Sydney such as Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Similarly, customers from Australia can access the airline’s network of U.S. and Mexico destinations from Los Angeles.

- As of October 31, the service increases from 7 to 10 weekly flights, compared to the austral winter season.
Both services will be operated on Airbus A350-900 aircraft with a capacity of 306 seats in four classes (32 Delta One Suites/48 Premium Select/36 Delta Comfort+/190 Main Cabin) and promotional fares start at US$1,049 each way.
According to data obtained by Aviacionline through the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development in the period from June 2018 to June 2019 between Sydney and Los Angeles moved 903,744 passengers and 36,189 tons of cargo. In the same timeframe, Delta carried 183,015 passengers and 7,613 tons of freight and mail between Australia and the United States.
In addition to offering two daily flights to Sydney for the first time, the airline’s South Pacific expansion for the austral summer includes a new non-stop service between Los Angeles and Auckland with daily flights operated on Airbus A350-900s and the resumption of operations to Papeete, Tahiti with three flights a week on Boeing 767-300ERs.
