World’s Fastest Airliner Hits the Brakes (Again): First Flight Postponed to 2027
PARIS- In a decision that should surprise no one, Boom’s project for a Supersonic Airliner is being delayed another year. In a presentation held on the Day 2 of the Paris Air Show, Overture’s First Flight has been moved to 2027, with a FAA certification and subsequent Entry Into Service expected now for 2030.
The new date is consistent with the delays of XB-1 prototype first flight, running 2 years behind its initial date, now set for the end of this year.
The company announced progress on Overture, though: it has successfully completed a major milestone in aviation industry by unveiling a Symphony engine 3-D printed mockup and further extended the collaboration with its engine design partner FTT for ground and flight testing, aiming for certification.
Boom has also signed structural supplier agreements with Aernnova for Overture’s wings, Leonardo for the fuselage and wing box, and Aciturri for the empennage; and it also unveiled Overture’s full systems configuration. Full systems, yes, even when there is no engine built.
To be fair, the company disclosed Symphony’s technical specifications, «demonstrating its compliance with FAA Part 33 and EASA CS 33 and its capability to operate on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)». A bold statement, but an easy one since it is all on paper. For the unrelentless reality check that Boom’s Overture is yet to face, we will have to wait another year.
