Wingo Restarts Flights On Iconic Bogota-Caracas Route

The inaugural flight of Wingo between Bogotá and Caracas is scheduled to depart at 3:30 PM on Tuesday, July 25. It is expected to land in the Venezuelan capital at 6:30 PM local time, thereby resuming a service that was suspended in March 2020 due to the pandemic.

The low-cost arm of Copa Holdings had launched the sale of this iconic route earlier this month, having obtained final permissions from the aviation authorities of Colombia and Venezuela. This is part of a long process that began in late 2022 when both countries reinstated flights between them.

“We celebrate and appreciate the institutional decision of both governments to allow Wingo to fly between Bogotá and Caracas. In doing so, we contribute to the full restoration of air connectivity between both countries, with the aim of providing citizens with more alternatives for their travel“, said Eduardo Lombana, CEO of Wingo.

The executive also added that they continue working to launch at least four more routes between Colombia and Venezuela in the medium term, in order to “contribute to a faster reactivation of commercial and tourist activity between both territories.”

Competition for flights between Caracas and Bogotá

Wingo will compete on the route between the two capitals with SATENA (3 weekly flights/150 seats per direction), LASER (5 weekly flights/735 seats per direction) and Turpial (4 weekly flights/576 seats per direction).

Once one of the most important South American markets, which averaged up to 17 daily flights in 2017, the Colombia-Venezuela route dropped to about 30 weekly flights in early 2020 by LASER, Avior, and Wingo.

According to data compiled by Aviacionline from statistics of the Civil Aeronautics of Colombia, in 2019, 157,169 passengers were registered on the Bogotá (BOG) – Caracas (CCS) route, with an average occupancy of 67.43%. This route was the seventh most important in South America at the El Dorado International Airport (BOG).
