Romanian Minister of National Defense, Angel Tîlvăr, signed a Letter of Intent on Tuesday regarding the establishment of the F-16 Training Center in Romania. The event took place during the Informal Meeting of EU Defense Ministers held in Toledo, Spain.

“This center is designed to bolster the proficiency of Romanian pilots in managing F-16 aircraft,” Angel Tîlvăr stated, highlighting that the center promises top-tier training for Romanian, Ukrainian, and other allied nation pilots.

Dutch F-16s Head to Romania

While the Netherlands is transferring its F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine’s Armed Forces, some will remain for the essential training of Ukrainian pilots. “Ukraine will need this training center,” emphasized Dutch Defense Minister, Kaisa Ollongren.

The Royal Dutch Air Force will station several F-16 aircraft at the 86th Air Base “Lieutenant Aviator Gheorghe Mociorniță” for effective training, supported by Lockheed Martin‘s technical expertise.

Regional Significance of the F-16 Training Center

Validated by the NATO Summit declaration in 2023, the 86th Air Base’s F-16 Training Center will serve as a pivotal regional hub. Tîlvăr envisages the center playing a significant role in fortifying Romania’s leadership in F-16 pilot training.

Recently, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu confirmed that the necessary approvals for initiating the training were secured, marking Romania’s inclusion in the coalition supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts.
