On July 7th, 1980, Aerolíneas Argentinas made its first non-scheduled transpolar flight using a Boeing 747-200. 14 months later, regular operations began, departing and arriving at Ministro Pistarini Airport (Buenos Aires), with a stopover in Rio Gallegos on the way to Oceania and non-stop on the connection to Argentina.

In 1987, Aerolíneas Argentinas operated between Buenos Aires and Auckland via Rio Gallegos with Boeing 747-200s. The continuation to Sydney began in the late 1980s.

The company stopped operating to New Zealand in 2012 and two years later to Australia. Since then, Aerolíneas Argentinas did not resume its services to Oceania, without taking into account the special operations to China via Auckland in 2021 and 2022 in search of vaccines against Coronavirus.

The last scheduled flights between Argentina and Oceania were in 2020, when Air New Zealand operated to the Argentine capital from Auckland, its main hub in the country.
Air New Zealand suspended its services as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, after four years of operations.
