#TBT: Lufthansa’s flights to Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay in 1988

Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Santiago de Chile were Lufthansa’s South American destinations in 1988 considering the southern part of the continent, all of them connecting to Frankfurt am Main Airport.

The airline used its Boeing 747s for these flights, which had three seating classes. Between First, Business and Economy, 384 places were available.

Brazil was the main market, with five weekly services, followed by Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, with three, two and one respectively.

These operations offered connections from Frankfurt to Amsterdam, Athens, Belgrade, Berlin, Bonn, Bremen, Brussels, Bucharest, Budapest, Cologne, Copenhagen, Damascus, Düsseldorf, Istanbul, Stockholm, Geneva, Hanover, Hamburg, Helsinki, London, Milan, Moscow, Munich, Nuremberg, Oslo, Paris, Prague, Rome, Stuttgart, Sofia, Tel Aviv, Warsaw, Vienna, Zagreb and Zurich.

From the four markets mentioned in this note, only Argentina and Brazil continue to be part of Lufthansa’s regular schedule. The last flight to Santiago de Chile was in 2006, while Uruguay had its final service in the 1990s.

Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo have a daily flight from Frankfurt with Boeing 747-8i aircraft, and Rio de Janeiro has three weekly operations with Munich on Airbus A350s.
