Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Viracopos and Santiago de Chile were Alitalia’s destinations in Argentina, Brazil and Chile in 1987. The Italian airline operated to and from Milan and Rome with Boeing 747-200 and Boeing 747 Combi aircraft, the latter capable of carrying cargo and passengers.

In terms of number of flights, Rio de Janeiro was Alitalia’s main destination in these markets, with a total of four weekly services. In second place was Buenos Aires, with three, Viracopos had two operations a week and the Chilean capital one.

As a result of financial problems, Alitalia ceased operations in mid-2021, being replaced by ITA Airways since the end of that year.
Currently, ITA offers 7 weekly flights to Buenos Aires and 11 to Sao Paulo, and will resume services to Rio de Janeiro in November. The Italian airline does not operate to Santiago.
