Abelo, an Irish turboprop lessor, announced a Heads of Agreement with regional aircraft manufacturer ATR for a firm order of 10 ATR 72-600 aircraft. Unveiled at the Dubai Airshow, the agreement also presents the option for 10 additional aircraft.

This new arrangement expands Abelo’s fleet, following its previous investment in July 2022, where it placed an order for 10 ATR 72-600s and confirmed a deal for 10 ATR 42-600S – the Short Take-Off and Landing version. The deal aligns with Abelo’s efforts to incorporate state-of-the-art turboprop technology into its operations.

Steve Gorman, CEO of Abelo, emphasized the strategic fit of the ATR aircraft with the company’s goals. “ATR aircraft are the perfect match for Abelo’s commitment to connecting communities and businesses in an economically and environmentally considerate way. Our goal is to transition to newer, lower-emission technologies, and ATR turboprops are well-suited for this purpose.”

“The introduction of our initial batch of aircraft has already made a positive impact, and this investment is expected to further enhance our service offerings, aiding our airline partners in achieving goals like reduced emissions and improved passenger comfort,” Gorman remarked.

Nathalie Tarnaud Laude, CEO of ATR, commented on the agreement. “With 30 ATRs ordered to date, Abelo’s preference for our aircraft reflects the market’s need for our fuel-efficient and cost-effective turboprops. These planes are economical and environmentally friendly, crucial for many regional airlines around the world.”

“Our relationship with Abelo is rooted in shared objectives and a mutual appreciation for the current and future value of turboprops. We look forward to continuously providing Abelo with advanced solutions,” Laude added.

The ATR 72-600, a focal point of this deal, is known for its efficiency and versatility. It seats up to 78 passengers and is designed for short-haul routes. The aircraft’s advanced avionics and fuel-efficient engines make it a popular choice for regional carriers. Its operational flexibility allows it to serve both high-density and thin routes.

In contrast, the ATR 42-600S model, previously ordered by Abelo, is tailored for short take-off and landing capabilities, enabling access to challenging airports with shorter runways. Accommodating around 42 passengers, this aircraft is ideal for connecting smaller communities and remote regions.

Abelo expects to receive its first new ATR aircraft by the end of this year, a part of the 2022 order. The additional planes from the latest agreement are scheduled for delivery from 2026 through 2028.
