Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) expands its Asia-Pacific presence with the start of nonstop flights between Copenhagen and Suvarnabhumi Airport. The inaugural service took place on October 30, almost 75 years after SAS’ first flight between Copenhagen and Bangkok. The new route will also cater to strong leisure demand during the winter season, offering customers more travel options for their vacations.

Flight SK 973 was operated on an Airbus A350 registered SE-KSF and christened «Hjalmar Viking». The aircraft took off from Copenhagen-Kastrup Airport at 00:38 local time and landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport at 17:34, after 10 hours and 56 minutes.

The Copenhagen-Bangkok route is a seasonal winter service. Both legs of the route will have night flight schedules, providing convenient connections to Scandinavia and other European destinations from Copenhagen Airport. SAS’ winter schedule in Asia-Pacific includes nonstop services to Tokyo Haneda and Shanghai with three weekly flights.

SAS first operated between Copenhagen and Bangkok in 1949. This flight marked a connection between Scandinavia and Thailand. A route that at the time had a duration of 36 hours and had stopovers in Zurich, Rome, Damascus, Karachi and Calcutta along the way.

SAS operated non-stop to Thailand for 64 years and ceased services in 2013. The airline now brought back the nonstop connection on October 30 after a decade-long absence. The flight lasts approximately 10 hours and 30 minutes.

«Thailand and the Scandinavian countries have a long history of friendship and cooperation and to return with a direct route is a real pleasure. The Bangkok route will offer a perfect entry point to a wider Thailand and Asia and will be a great option for both business and leisure travelers,» said Paul Verhagen, SAS Chief Commercial Officer, Paul Verhagen.
