British low-cost carrier (LCC) easyJet will launch its base in Birmingham early, it has announced this Tuesday (28). Sales for 16 new destinations from the airline’s ninth base in the United Kingdom will start on Thursday (30).
easyJet announced, earlier this year, it would open a base in the city — which it says is its first base opening in the UK in more than a decade — with three Airbus A320, configured with 186 seats. The LCC will start the new routes progressively from March 18, 2024.
The new destinations from the airline’s Birmingham base are Alicante, Antalya, Barcelona, Berlin, Corfu, Dalaman, Enfidha, Fuerteventura, Heraklion, Jersey, Kos, Larnaca, Malaga, Rhodes, Sharm el Sheikh and Tenerife. easyJet already connects the city to 13 destinations, both domestic and international.
With a heavy focus on leisure, the commercial set up of easyJet’s new base will be assisted by the group’s growing travel package business, easyJet Holidays. The business unit is a growing focus of the group’s management.
«We are delighted to be opening our Birmingham base early, demonstrating our continued confidence in the region with customers choosing us for our trusted brand, unrivalled network and great value fares», stated Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK Country Manager, in a press release.
«Investing in a ninth base in the UK strengthens easyJet’s network by positioning it as the carrier of choice to serve UK consumers and capture demand for travel, further growing our share of the UK leisure market for both the airline and easyJet holidays.»
Birmingham Airport’s aviation director, Tom Screen, added that «to say we’re excited is an understatement. This will bring jobs to the region and greater choice for customers, particularly as easyJet holidays cements its place in the Midlands market with great package deals.»
