Air Europa has held a special event for the arrival of its latest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to celebrate the continuity of its aircraft deliveries foreseen in its Strategic Plan. It has also shown Globalia’s new maintenance hangar at Madrid-Barajas airport for the first time, which is expected to enter service in March this year. The facility, a more than 30 million euro investment, will become a technical center for the airline.
The hangar is 140 meters long and 23 meters high inside, in an open-plan space that will be able to accommodate up to three widebody aircraft, such as the Dreamliner, or up to six narrowbodies such as the Boeing 737.
In total, it occupies an area of more than 22,400 square meters and a maintenance area of 11,300 square meters. The facility will employ 115 professionals, although the workforce will gradually grow to 180 direct employees by 2025.
Dreamliner fleet expansion
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is the mainstay of Air Europa‘s long-haul operations, with four units scheduled to arrive between December 2023 and 2024. The airline aims to increase the fleet, increase seat capacity and add frequencies on existing routes by 2024.
By the end of 2023, Air Europa’s Dreamliner fleet mobilized more than 15.6 million passengers since the aircraft’s arrival at the company in 2016, when it became the first Spanish company to acquire it. This model has been key to the airline’s expansion and consolidating its strategic role in the Madrid hub.
«Air Europa has been a key partner in Europe for the 787 Dreamliner program and we are delighted to directly deliver the first 787s to the Air Europa fleet starting in early 2020. The 787-9 will enable Air Europa to further expand its operations in a cost-effective manner. opening new long-haul routes, as well as contributing to an impressive fuel burn improvement of 20 to 25 percent,» said Sergio Ramos, Director of Commercial Sales for Europe and Israel, The Boeing Company.
