Norse Atlantic Airways Challenges Duopoly with New London-Cape Town Route

Norse Atlantic Airways announced today the launch of a new route between London Gatwick and Cape Town, set to begin on October 28, 2024. The service, operating three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, seeks to provide an additional option for travelers between the United Kingdom and South Africa in a market dominated by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

The airline has set prices starting from £499 for a round-trip in Economy class and £1199 in Norse Premium class.

We are thrilled to introduce our new route between London and Cape Town. By breaking the duopoly on this route, we are not only expanding travel options for consumers but also driving down costs and putting the customer back in the pilot’s seat. At Norse Atlantic Airways, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the wonders of the world and our new route to Cape Town will allow many more people to visit this amazing destination,” said Bjorn Tore Larsen, CEO and Founder of Norse Atlantic Airways.

Stephanie Wear, VP of Aviation Development at London Gatwick Airport said, “Norse has continued to grow at London Gatwick and provide excellent connectivity to a number of key markets across the USA. This new route to South Africa is great news not only for those looking for a fantastic holiday destination, but also for trade and inbound tourism.”

The flight will depart from London Gatwick on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 20:00, arriving in Cape Town at 9:30 the following day. Conversely, flights will depart from the South African airport on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 11:45, arriving in London at 21:35 the same day.

As seen in Cirium, on the London – Cape Town route (although operating from Heathrow), Norse will face British Airways, which offers a daily flight. Considering the South African market as a whole, the IAG airline also operates two daily flights on the London Heathrow – Johannesburg route, where Virgin Atlantic is also present with a daily flight.

Through its subsidiary Norse Atlantic UK, the Norwegian-origin company flies from London Gatwick to New York-JFK (one daily flight), Los Angeles (3), Orlando (6), and Miami (5). From September Las Vegas will also be added.
